Harry Toivonen - Family Business

When it comes to families in motorsport, the name of Toivonen is right up there at the pinnacle of rallying.  Starting with Pauli, who debuted on the world scene in 1961 driving Citroëns, with which he won the 1000 Lakes in 1962, and later Porsches that he guided to the European Rally Championship in 1968, he was succeeded by two sons, Harri and Henri, the latter tragically losing his life in 1986 during the Tour de Corse.

Now, after much experience and many good results on both circuits and on the rally stages, Harri is returning to the rally scene with a Ford Sierra RS Cosworth with which to tackle the 2018 FIA International Historic Rally Championship.

“My father won the European Rally Championship 50 yrs ago.  In that time that was like a World Championship!!  This year Cedric Wrede and I will try to win the Historic European Rally Championship, with a ‘new’ Ford Sierra 4x4 starting from Rally Costa Brava.”

Harri intends to go for the Championship win as tribute to his father’s European win 50 years ago this year.  Historic Motor Racing News will bring you a season-long rally-by-rally account of his exploits, including post-event comment from the man himself.

The first round of the 2018 Championship is the Costa Brava Rally, which  has just taken place as we go to press.  Our heroes came third overall in the European Championship and second in Category 4 for pre-1990 cars.  We will give you a full report next month.
