After 37 years, Peter May of UK MG competition engine specialists Peter May Engineering will hand over the reins of the business to Dominic Mooney, managing director of Midland Classic Restorations in a move that will secure the long term future of the well known engineering firm.

May will continue to work within the business in the short term before taking retirement in March 2017.

He commented, “Over the last eight years we have worked together on numerous projects and during this time we have shared many engineering ideas and product development plans. I am sure that my customers will continue to enjoy the success and reliability they have always gained from using Peter May Engineering parts and engines.”

Dominic Mooney, MCR director said, “I have enjoyed working with Peter over the last few years and have benefitted from his knowledge and experience. I have a number of plans moving forward with regards to a range of new products for the future, but for now my intention is to continue to build on the good company name that Peter has developed and ensure that we continue to develop the very best engines and parts for our customers.”

Change of Dates

Formula 1 organisers took everyone by surprise when they announced their 2017 calendar in early December, as these differed from their previously published provisional calendar. This caused repercussions in the rest of the racing world and meant that Silverstone Classic had to change its date from 21-23 July to 28-30 July in order to leave a two week gap between the British Grand Prix and Silverstone’s second biggest event of the year.

New dates for the Goodwood Festival of Speed are also a consequence of the F1 changes, which move the Baku race later by one week. The Festival will run on 29 June-2 July to allow the F1 teams and drivers to be present at Goodwood.

Continuation Astons

The latest manufacturer to get into the continuation car business is Aston Martin, who will produce a limited edition of 25 DB4 GT Lightweight replicas.


GT and Sports Car Cup

Vanessa and Flavien Marçais held their annual GTSCC prizegiving lunch at the bright new premises of London car dealer Gregor Fisken on 3 December. Overall winners of the pre-’66 GT series, and winners of class GT3, were Jeremy Welch and Martyn Corfield, driving an Austin Healey 3000. Other class winners were Malcolm Paul, Rick Bourne and Wil Arif (TVR Grantura MK III) in class GT2, and Leo Voyazides/Simon Hadfield (AC Cobra 289) in GT4. A special ladies prize went to Linzi Smart, who has photographed the series for the last ten years, and whose photos are often seen in the pages of Historic Motor Racing News. Spirit of the Series award went to Chris Clarkson and David Smithies, who drive an Austin Healey 3000 and who were second in GT3 class to Welch and Corfield.

Les Grandes Heures Automobiles

Grandes Heures event partner Peugeot gathered an impressive collection of the French marque’s competition cars for the 2016 Grandes Heures event, including this spectacular and loud short-tail CD Peugeot LM66 aerodynamic endurance racer.

Organisers of this ambitious new event, which brings a moving automobile show to the historic Linas Montlhéry track just outside of Paris, have signed a contract with notoriously difficult circuit owners automobile manufacturers consortium UTAC CERAM, that will assure the event until 2022.
